AI-Powered Innovations to Transform Stroke Care in Europe: Welcoming the UMBRELLA Project
This week marks the launch of UMBRELLA, a groundbreaking initiative to
revolutionise stroke care in Europe. Spearheaded by the Vall d’Hebron
Research Institute (VHIR) and Siemens Healthineers, the project brings
together over 20 public and private partners, aiming to transform stroke
diagnosis, prevention, and treatment.
More than 1 million stroke patients and nearly 10 million survivors in Europe
stand to benefit from UMBRELLA’s innovations. The project focuses on
developing AI-powered solutions, using Real World Data (RWD) and cutting-
edge digital technologies to enhance diagnosis, speed up treatment, and
reduce long-term complications, ultimately improving quality of life for patients.
UMBRELLA is funded by Innovative Health Initiative (IHI), a partnership for
health research and innovation between the EU and Europe’s life science
industries. It will run for five years until 2029 with an overall budget of 26.9
million euros. The Innovative Health Initiative (IHI) will contribute 14.8 million
euros, and 12.1 million euros will be covered by industry partners participating
in the consortium.
As stroke continues to be a leading cause of disability and mortality in Europe,
UMBRELLA aims to bridge gaps in care, providing tailored solutions from
diagnosis to rehabilitation.
