Revolutionising Stroke Care in Europe

Revolutionising Stroke Care in Europe

Welcome to Umbrella, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at transforming stroke care across Europe. This project brings together over 20 public and private organisations, led by Vall d’Hebron Institute of Research (VHIR) and Siemens Healthineers.

With a holistic approach that covers the entire stroke care pathway, Umbrella harnesses the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) and cutting-edge digital technologies to improve stroke prevention and diagnosis, reduce time to treatment, and prevent long-term damage.

Establish a new paradigm in
stroke management across Europe

Standardise, harmonise, and integrate real-world stroke data using advanced digital technologies like seamless communication systems, innovative imaging techniques, wearables, and home-based virtual rehabilitation.

Real-World Stroke Data

Develop a federated data platform (U-platform) to locally create and validate AI algorithms using retrospective hospital data for personalised diagnosis, stroke risk prediction, and treatment decisions.

Federated Data Platform

Train U-Platform generated algorithms using a federated learning system (FL-platform) that ensures data security and privacy by keeping patient data local, while enabling collective AI training to benefit stroke patients across Europe.

Data Security & Privacy

Facilitate communications across interoperable silos, using novel digital technologies for patient engagement, real-time monitoring, data visualisation, and decision-making.

Patient Engagement

Develop a roadmap to regulatory compliance and future certification for selected stroke cases’ management and the UMBRELLA FL-platform.

Regulatory Compliance Roadmap

Further our understanding of stroke and the underlying causes of the 25% of cases lacking a clear aetiology to advance prevention strategies.

Stroke Understanding & Prevention

Enhanced Stroke Care for Patients Leading to Better Health Outcomes

Our interdisciplinary and holistic approach seeks to enable beyond state-of-the-art stroke management so that patients can receive better care across the whole pathway, from stroke prevention and diagnosis to treatment and rehabilitation. This will imply better health outcomes and potentially reduce healthcare costs by 9 billion euros in Europe.

Harness the Potential of AI-based Technologies to Advance Stroke Management

By using AI and advanced digital technologies in Umbrella, healthcare professionals can gain access to integrated patient data, improved visualisation, predictive models, and clinical support systems. This will lead to improved coordination, patient outcomes, and cost-effective, personalised healthcare.

Integrated Industry Solutions for Coordinated Decision-making and Efficient Stroke Care

Integration of advance solutions developed by medical, technological, pharmaceutical and biotechnology partners to enable coordinated decision-making by all healthcare professionals involved in the entire stroke care pathways.

Better Healthcare Decisions with Improved Integrated Data Access.

UMBRELLA enables scalable, patient-centred treatments, ensuring equitable access and better outcomes, especially for patients in rural or underserved areas, without straining healthcare budgets.

Standardise, harmonise and integrate in a federated manner real world stroke data

Aligned with the EC’s 'European Health Data Space' (EHDS) proposal, UMBRELLA's federated health data exchange enables cost-effective research, personalised care, and faster, informed decision-making using Real World Evidence (RWE).
